LOWER EAST SIDE COMMUNITY HERO
Joyce Mendelsohn is the author of The Lower East Side Remembered and Revisited: History and Guide to a Legendary Neighborhood. She is a granddaughter of immigrants who settled on the Lower East Side and the daughter of parents who were born here. Joyce was a teacher at P.S. 188 and then worked at the Tenement Museum in the early 1990s as the first Director of Education. She served on the Board of the Lower East Side Jewish Conservancy where she created docent training programs for neighborhood walking tours.
Joyce received the first Lillian Wald Award from Henry Street Settlement in 2004 and a Grassroots Preservation Award from the Historic Districts Council in 2010. She is one of three founding members, along with Linda Jones and Mitchell Grubler, of Friends of the Lower East Side, a dedicated preservation organization founded in 2011. They have led successful campaigns for landmark designation of the Bialystoker Home, Seward Park Branch Library and 339 Grand Street. And, they continue the battle to preserve the architectural, social and cultural heritage of the Lower East Side as reflected in its landmark-worthy buildings and streetscapes.
