LOWER EAST SIDE COMMUNITY HERO
Nominated by Susan LaRosa, Henry Street Settlement
Ruth Taube is the Program Director of Home Planning Workshop at Henry Street Settlement. A Lower East Side native, Ruth spent her younger years in a walk-up apartment on Avenue D & East 5 Street.
Ruth has always been a very determined person. Not only she learned english on her own when growing up, but she also learned to sew. She mastered the skill so well that she used to copy the clothes in the department stores, since she could not afford them. To support her daughter, she took a job at Henry Street Settlement, teaching sewing. Since that moment Ruth has taught generations of children, men and women from the Lower East Side to learn how to sew, knit, embroider and crochet. Ruth has become more than just a teacher to many of her students and the Lower East Side community, from being a life connoisseur to becoming a family member to all.
